Massey Energy Announces Bradbury Safety Award and Green Miner Environmental Award Winners

JULIAN, W.Va., March 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Massey Energy Company (NYSE: MEE) today announced that its Edwight Mining Company subsidiary won the Company's prestigious Bradbury Safety Award and that Sidney Coal Company won the company's coveted Green Miner Environmental Award for 2010. The winning companies were presented with the awards at ceremonies on March 8 and 9, 2011 in Charleston.

The Bradbury Safety Award annually recognizes the Massey operating subsidiary that best exemplifies the Company's commitment to safety excellence.  Edwight Mining Company won the award for 2010 – the second win for Edwight in three years.  Members at Edwight Mining Company worked over 312,000 hours and mined 1,216,829 tons of coal without incurring any reportable incidents involving injury or any accidents resulting in lost time at work.  This resulted in a perfect 0.00 Total Reportable Incidence Rate (TRIR) and 0.00 NFDL Rate for Edwight in 2010.  NFDL rates are the benchmark used by the coal industry to measure safety.

The Green Miner Award annually recognizes the Massey subsidiary with the best environmental performance and most impressive commitment to environmental management.  Sidney Coal Company, a previous winner and perennial top contender for the award, won the award for 2010.  Sidney manages nearly 300 sediment control structures and has achieved a perfect compliance record on water quality over the last two years.
