McGraw-Hill Education Announces Student Art Contest Winners; Awards $174,000 in Classroom Resources

NEW YORK, Dec. 5, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- McGraw-Hill Education today announced 12 winners of the "This is McGraw-Hill My Math" student art contest. Designed to inspire students' passion for math and other STEM fields, the national contest challenged students to illustrate what math means to them through sculpture, drawing, painting and photography. The 12 selected students, two from each grade K-5, will have their artwork featured on McGraw-Hill's newest elementary math program, McGraw-Hill My Math, and displayed at the new Museum of Mathematics when it opens next year in New York City. 

A panel of judges, including artists, educators and journalists selected the 12 pieces of artwork out of more than 2,400 entries submitted from students across the country.  The winning selections can be viewed in an online gallery at https://www.mheonline.com/. The 12 selected student artists are: 

• Levin Neighbors, a kindergartner at Upson Lee South Elementary in Thomaston, Ga.
• Marya Barnaba and Lauren Schowoski, kindergartners at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Elementary in Essex, Md.
• Wilmer Cortez Cabrera, first-grader at New Hampshire Estates Elementary in Silver Spring, Md.
• Samantha Garza, a first-grader at Emma Vera Elementary in Roma, Texas.
• Alyssa Gonzalez, a second-grader at Veterans Elementary in Chula Vista, Calif.
• Finely Moss, a second-grader at Sunset Elementary in Miami, Fla.
• Matt Gardner, a third-grader at Union Elementary in Union, Miss.
• Abby Crutchley, a third-grader at Slackwood Elementary in Lawrenceville, N.J.
• Carolyn Phung, a fourth-grader at Jenkins Elementary in Lawrenceville, Ga.
• Grace Kramer, a fourth-grader at Seton Catholic School in Peosta, Iowa.
• Caelyn Cochran, a fifth-grader at Forest City Elementary in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
• Amaan Rahman, a fifth-grader at George A. Jackson Elementary in Jericho, N.Y.

The classrooms of the selected student artists will receive nearly $15,000 in fun and functional classroom prizes through the generous support of contest sponsors including Promethean, netTrekker, Psychological Software Solutions,  Intel, Texas Instruments, eInstruction, VWR Education/Science Kit, The Math Forum @ Drexel and Crayola.
