McGraw-Hill Experts and Authors Present at National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Conference

NEW YORK, April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- How does the early math learner develop and build an understanding of mathematics? How do you reach every child during a math lesson? How do you effectively incorporate technology in the math classroom? These are just some of the questions that McGraw-Hill Education will answer during the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Annual Meeting and Exhibition in San Diego, where it is sponsoring, exhibiting and presenting April 21-24, 2010.

The four-day event brings together the nation's top math educators interested in professional development and the most current thought leadership in math education. The conference's sessions and workshops are designed to provide educators with concepts, skills and best practices they can implement to enhance math instruction and outcomes when returning to their schools and districts.

McGraw-Hill Education experts and authors will host and participate in conference sessions and provide in-booth presentations that showcase the latest technologies, products, techniques and research in math education.

Throughout the conference, three of the McGraw-Hill Education's Learning Solutions Centers – STEM, Intervention & Special Needs and College & Career Readiness – will exhibit at booth No. 1423, which will feature product and technology demonstrations presented by McGraw-Hill Education experts and authors throughout each day.

Participants who attend a technology demo and in-booth presentation and complete a raffle card will have an opportunity to win an iPad; one winner will be selected and announced each day of the conference. Additionally, Twitter users can enter to win a Flip video camera by following McGraw-Hill Education (http://twitter.com/MHEducation) and correctly answering a trivia question. One camera will be given away each day of the conference.

Presenting at the McGraw-Hill Education booth will be Dr. Douglas H. Clements, the SUNY Distinguished Professor in the University at Buffalo's Graduate School of Education and an active member of the Mathematics Work Team focusing on the K-12 Common Core State Standards Initiative. He will discuss some of his latest research on early math education and math intervention as well as a forthcoming pre-K-5 universal math-screening tool currently under development with McGraw-Hill Education. During the course of the conference, Dr. Clements will also discuss topics ranging from common core standards and National Research Council findings to assessment instruments and learning trajectories.

Additionally, McGraw-Hill Education will take part in a variety of sessions and one exhibitor workshop:

What: "So You've Got a SMART™ Board: Now What?" featuring McGraw-Hill K-12 Mathematics lead author Roger Day, who will demonstrate and discuss various ways to use the SMART Board for teaching and learning mathematics, from algebra to calculus, including use of SMART Notebook Math, the new notebook software for mathematics classrooms (for 9-12 classrooms).

What: "Reaching All Learners in the Mathematics Classroom" featuring Donna Long, an author of Grades K-5 Math Connects, who will explore when direct instruction is most appropriate and when partners and small groups are most effective.

What: "Intervention, the Ultimate Connector: Integrating Concepts, Content, Contexts and Cultures" featuring Carolyn M. Moore, senior national mathematics consultant for McGraw-Hill Education, who will address the hard fact that everyone needs intervention at some time. This session (for pre-K-8 classrooms) will engage participants in fun activities, a variety of representations (concrete/visual/virtual), and active discussions to link concepts, content, context, and culture, thereby ensuring fairness and accessibility for all students, including the disenfranchised.

When: Friday, April 23, 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Where: Manchester 1/2 (Marriott)

What: "Exploring Democratic Education, Opportunity, and Equity" featuring McGraw-Hill mathematics author Carol Elaine Malloy who will examine mathematics in a context that addresses social justice (for 6-12 classrooms).

When: Saturday, April 24, 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Where: 6B (San Diego Convention Center)

The NCTM conference will also include presentations by NASA representatives and academicians and departments of education from across the country.
