McGraw-Hill Hosts Discussion on Career and Technical Education at 2010 Celebration of Teaching & Learning

NEW YORK, March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- McGraw-Hill Education's College & Career Readiness Learning Solutions Center today hosted a presentation by Gregg B. Betheil, executive director, Office of Postsecondary Pathways and Planning with the New York City Department of Education, at the 2010 Celebration of Teaching & Learning.  In his presentation, Mr. Betheil walked the attendees through the evolution of technical education programs in New York from 1908 through the present – highlighting how state- and nation-wide career and technical education (CTE) initiatives have shaped numerous institutions throughout the city.

The presentation kicked off the Celebration of Teaching and Learning, a two-day professional development conference that brought more than 8,500 education professionals from across the country to New York City to share best practices and examine issues key to student success.

Manager of the Mayor's Task Force on Career and Technical Education Innovation, Mr. Betheil addressed how CTE programs, instructors and students must evolve to meet the requirements of a very competitive job market.  In his role as the executive director of the newly formed Office of Postsecondary Pathways and Planning, Mr. Betheil leads the New York City Department of Education's ongoing efforts to ensure that all graduates are ready for postsecondary success, in two- and four-year colleges, apprenticeship programs and throughout their careers. His responsibilities include oversight of the NYCDOE-CUNY College Readiness & Success Initiative, as well as guidance to ensure there is consistent and coherent information on postsecondary planning for students and families from kindergarten through graduation.

After joining the NYCDOE in January 2008, Mr. Betheil managed the Mayor's Task Force on Career and Technical Education Innovation, and he continues to provide oversight and support of the CTE portfolio. That portfolio includes 30 CTE schools serving more than 30,000 students, and 345 CTE programs across city schools, serving more than 110,000 students.
