MCS Foundation Announces Grand Opening of Island-Wide Laundry Facilities at Acción Social de Puerto Rico Facilities
Initiative mitigates the challenges many have faced from lack of clean clothing and linens as a result of the absence of water and power across the island
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, Dec. 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The MCS Foundation and Acción Social de Puerto Rico celebrated the opening of Acción Social's community laundry services provided at its 24 centers during an event in Cidra, Puerto Rico. MCS Foundation has donated 30 washing machines, two of which are in the Cidra center; and 30 power generators. The remaining appliances have been distributed among the remaining 23 Acción Social de Puerto Rico's centers across the island. MCS also participated in the Cidra event by delivering health clinics and informational sessions to the attending audience.
"We expect this effort to help more than 10,000 people in the communities near the centers and are honored to be part of this project," said Liana Marante O'Drobinak, Executive Director of MCS Foundation. "Because we operate right here in Puerto Rico, we can quickly adapt our post-hurricane relief to what is needed at a particular point in time. We were drawn to this project because it can make a huge difference to a person's emotional and physical health to put on clean clothes and sleep in a clean bed. We applaud the creativity of this initiative and believe that it underscores Acción Social's unique ability to bring practical solutions to the island's challenges. That is possible because of its proximity to and everyday contact with the needs of the underprivileged across the island, even in the most remote areas."
Acción Social de Puerto Rico is one of the non-profit organizations that benefits from the MCS Foundation's Green for Puerto Rico fundraising campaign. With a total goal of $1.5 million, the campaign seeks to raise $750,000 that will be matched dollar for dollar by MCS. Other organizations benefitting from the MCS Foundation campaign include the Boys & Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico, Caras Las Américas' www.connectrelief.com and the YMCAs of Puerto Rico.
Alicia Ramírez, Executive Director of Acción Social de Puerto Rico, described what moved them to come up with the laundry program. "With no electrical power in many regions, laundry service for our low income communities has become an essential need. But it's more than just doing laundry -- it's also to connect residents with other services they might need and to let them know there are people who care about them with no strings attached. With programs like this, we can give them hope as well as help. Through our alliance with the MCS Foundation, we give life to our slogan: Joining forces to transform lives," she said.
