WHY: Improper flushing is a bigger problem than many people realize.

Through RFA's #FlushSmart campaign, recognition of the Do Not Flush symbol increased from 69% of Californians recognizing it in 2021 to 81% of adults nationally recognizing it in 2024, according to RFA's annual survey. Additionally, about half (49%) of Americans rely on product packaging to determine if something is flushable or not.

However, 51% of people are still flushing items they know they shouldn't, making RFA's education outreach still important.
