Meitu Launches The Meitu M8 Selfie Smartphone

Since launching its first photo editing app in 2008 and first selfie smartphone in 2013, Meitu has grown to become the leader in mobile Augmented Reality (AR), virtual try-on and Artificial Intelligence-based facial recognition, with an enormous database enabling its technology to easily identify human faces across all its products.

Meitu M8 camera phone utilizes the same selfie-specific Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning algorithms Meitu smartphones are known for – with the ability to detect and enhance faces based on age, gender and facial features. Meitu M8 expands on this capability with the introduction of a new technology to detect and enhance backgrounds.

With backgrounds, Meitu M8 can accurately distinguish between people, objects and scenery to allow beautification and enhancements on individual layers. The phone is equipped with additional features to enhance backgrounds, including color selection options, selfie light exposure modification, adding blurs for various depth effects, stylish backdrop choices and scene replacements. Users can apply these powerful functions to a wide range of pictures from landscape photographs to selfies.

In addition to recognizing and applying custom selfie beautification based on gender, age and facial features, Meitu M8 can also differentiate between portrait sizes, face shapes and subject light exposure to harmonize and compose all of the elements of users' photographs. Moreover, it can analyze information such as skin tone and hair color and allow users to target different areas of the face and body to beautify.

Meitu M8 features upgraded hardware with a sextuple-curved 3D glass surface, available in two series options and four color choices – the "Fresh and Hip" series (Moonlight White and Cherry Blossom Pink) and the "Chic and Classy" series (Phantom Red and Dazzling Purple).

Simple-to-use with powerful functionality, Meitu M8 is outfitted with a 21-megapixel back camera and 12 dual pixels on the selfie side – with a front full-pixel PDAF millisecond-level focusing system, a front OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) system, and Meitu's exclusive fourth-generation dual-image engine. The SONY IMX362 front dual-pixel selfie lens enables more accurate focusing to provide optimum image quality. With this union of cutting-edge AI technology and powerful hardware, Meitu M8 captures every detail with sharper image results, even in the most challenging lighting and environmental conditions.

RENOWNED DESIGNERS WORLDWIDE JOIN FORCES FOR CUSTOMIZATION OPTIONS

With Meitu M8 comes new partnerships with prominent designers around the world to bring mobile device personalization to the next level. Users can engrave special symbols or texts on the sides of the phones and select their favorite style out of 10 themes, each created by top designers such as Salvatore DellAquila, Duncan Sham and Tash Willcocks. Users are able to take their customization preferences to the next level and customize gift boxes, phone cases, screen backgrounds, letterheads as well as select their text of choice to be printed inside of the Meitu M8 gift boxes.

Meitu is offering Hello Kitty and Sailor Moon special editions of the Meitu M8, with an extremely limited 10,000 units of the Sailor Moon option available. Both collaborative editions come with exclusive exterior designs, special UIs, gift boxes and collection certificates. The Sailor Moon limited edition is even supplemented with exclusive accessories such as a unique moon wand selfie stick.

The standard Meitu M8 and Hello Kitty Special Edition phones are open for pre orders via Meitu's official website. The phones will be available for purchase through Meitu's website on May 12th at 12:00 pm, and from Tmall, Suning, and JD.COM, starting at 8 pm on May 12^th.

The standard Meitu M8 will be priced at 2599 RMB ($376), while the Hello Kitty Special Edition and the Sailor Moon Limited Edition will be priced at 2799 RMB ($405) and 2999 RMB ($434) respectively. They are expected to launch in Hong Kong in mid-June.
