What: More than 160 Meritor employees will build 48 exterior and interior walls for the construction of a four-bedroom Habitat for Humanity house in Detroit. At the same time, a car show will feature more than 40 classic cars, trucks and motorcycles, plus Paul Noakes, driver of the Meritor-sponsored National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Mustang drag car.
Why: Meritor pledges to support and strengthen the communities in which its employees live and work. This event is supported entirely by employee volunteer efforts. Last year's show raised more than $12,700 for Habitat for Humanity Detroit.
Meritor recently launched the "Power of Volunteering" employee volunteer initiative to achieve 40,000 hours of employee community service annually by 2020. Troy-based employees will contribute more than $150,000 to more than 35 local charities in 2012.
When: Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012 (rain or shine). The build is 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and the car show is 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
