Mexican Caribbean Celebrates Día de Muertos Through Janal Pixán and Cultural Traditions Across the Destination
From Maya ceremonies and community festivals to immersive cultural programming and artistic tributes, destinations across the Mexican Caribbean honored loved ones and celebrated ancestral traditions during Día de Muertos.
QUINTANA ROO, Mexico, Nov. 5, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Communities across the Mexican Caribbean came together to commemorate Día de Muertos through Janal Pixán, the ancient Maya tradition of honoring loved ones through food, remembrance and cultural celebration. Throughout the holiday period, destinations including Puerto Morelos, the Riviera Maya and Cozumel hosted festivals, ceremonies, artistic performances and community gatherings that celebrated the region's rich cultural heritage while preserving traditions passed down through generations.
Meaning food for the souls, Janal Pixán is an ancestral Maya tradition observed throughout the Mexican Caribbean region. Families create altars adorned with photographs, candles, flowers, water and offerings of favorite foods, including traditional dishes such as tamales, atole and mucbipollo, a large tamal traditionally cooked in an underground píib oven. The three-day celebration honors children, adults and all souls, while keeping Maya customs and culinary traditions alive for future generations.
While sharing similarities with Mexico's broader Día de Muertos traditions, Janal Pixán maintains its own distinct Maya identity. Throughout the Mexican Caribbean, communities marked the occasion through cultural performances, artistic displays, culinary experiences and longstanding traditions that reflect the region's living heritage.
Puerto Morelos Celebrated Mar de Almas Janal Pixán
In Puerto Morelos, residents and visitors participated in the annual Mar de Almas Janal Pixán celebration, which highlighted the cultural roots of the Caribbean region through decorated boat and walking processions, a traditional Maya fire ceremony, the blessing of the municipal altar, altar visits and folkloric performances.
The celebration also featured a series of contests showcasing local creativity and artistry, including decorated boats, decorated façades, handcrafted Catrinas and alebrijes, monumental Catrina displays, and traditional Catrina competitions. Together, the festivities transformed the coastal community into a vibrant tribute to remembrance, culture and heritage.
Riviera Maya Hosted Xcaret's Festival of Life and Death Traditions
In the Riviera Maya, Xcaret's acclaimed Festival of Life and Death Traditions welcomed visitors for four days of cultural programming dedicated to Mexico's Día de Muertos heritage. Guests explored colorful altars and offerings, walked beneath cempasúchil-lined arches, participated in workshops, discovered traditional handicrafts, and enjoyed live music, theatrical productions and folkloric performances.
Across the destination, resorts also embraced the holiday through commemorative programming. At Hilton Cancun, an All-Inclusive Resort, celebrations included family-friendly activities, themed entertainment, traditional food stations and a Día de Muertos altar. Meanwhile, Hilton Tulum Riviera Maya All-Inclusive Resort hosted culinary workshops, ancestral ceremonies, Catrina parades and evening performances inspired by Mexico's rich cultural legacy.
Cozumel Honored Tradition Through Art and Culture
Earlier in the season, El Museo de la Isla de Cozumel hosted Tradición, Luz y Reencuentro, Tradition, Light and Reunion, a three-day festival celebrating remembrance through art, music and cultural expression.
Dedicated to the state of Michoacán, this year's edition featured a monumental altar, visual arts exhibitions, video mapping projections, folkloric dance performances, theatrical presentations and a community Catrina contest. A collective exhibition inspired by the monarch butterfly, a symbol of remembrance and return in Purépecha tradition, highlighted the connection between artistic expression and cultural heritage.
The festival also brought together local artists, performers and community members through musical performances, dance presentations, and a closing ceremony honoring the souls remembered throughout the celebration.
Honoring Heritage Through Living Traditions
As Día de Muertos celebrations concluded across the Mexican Caribbean, Janal Pixán once again served as a powerful reminder of the region's deep cultural roots and enduring traditions. From community-led ceremonies and artistic tributes to large-scale cultural festivals, the holiday brought together residents and visitors in a shared celebration of memory, family and heritage.
Through these annual observances, the Mexican Caribbean continues to preserve and showcase the traditions that define the region while fostering a deeper appreciation for the living Maya culture.
