CHICAGO, Nov. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Today the South East Chicago Commission (SECC) and the Special Service Area Hyde Park, announced five kick off events planned for Small Business Saturday, November 29, 2014 in support of five mid-south side Chicago neighborhoods: Hyde Park, Kenwood, Oakland, Washington Park and Woodlawn.
The hour-long kick off events will be held at five (5) local businesses throughout the day including Daley's Restaurant at 8 am, Harper Theater at 10 am, Red Apple Grocery Store at 11:30 am, and Faie Afrikan Art Gallery jointly with Fort Smith at 1 pm. As an incentive to arrive early, interested shoppers will receive the brand new South Side Shop Local Savings book, which is filled with $250 of instant coupons. With 35 local businesses offering discounts, this initiative has created $125,000 worth of consumer savings for shopping local.
Wendy Walker Williams, Executive Director of the SECC says, "By choosing to support locally owned businesses, we help maintain the diversity and uniqueness of what you can find on the mid-south side."
The Special Service Area Hyde Park, operated by the SECC, has also allocated resources to encourage local spending with its first-ever Hyde Park Trolley. In a survey of 735 responders conducted by the SSA from July 30 through September 11 this year, 91% of survey responders were "likely" and 61% were "very likely" to use a free trolley to travel through the business district. More than 50% said they would use it several times a week or more. This holiday season, Hyde Park shoppers will get FREE transportation via the Hyde Park Trolley beginning on Black Friday, November 28th. The trolley is an excellent example of responsiveness to community interests and assistance to local businesses.
Holiday shoppers can access the locations for the Small Business Saturday kick off events, the local businesses offering Shop Local Savings coupons, and the route for the Hyde Park trolley using the new interactive map of the mid-south side neighborhoods.
