Study shows which US cities drive the most for work
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Outside of commuting, millions of Americans drive for work and take a hefty mileage deduction while doing so. According to a new study, US workers who use their personal vehicle for business purposes drive over 10,000 business miles per year and deduct nearly $6,000 each year on their taxes. However, when it comes to business driving, not all cities are created equal.

A study released today shows that workers in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area top the nation in business driving - racking up 23 percent more business miles per driver and deducting nearly $1,400 more than the national average. "With a robust economy spanning across industries and a vast geographic area, it's not surprising to see the Dallas Ft-Worth area at the top of the list," said Chuck Dietrich, CEO and cofounder of MileIQ, a San Francisco company whose automatic mileage logging mobile application is used by hundreds of thousands of self-directed workers.
Another Texas city, Houston, narrowly takes the number two spot on the list with workers in that market logging 21.4 percent more business miles than the US average.

There are more than 60 million self-directed workers in the US, all of whom are eligible to take a tax deduction for the business miles they drive. In addition, there are millions of workers who are reimbursed by their employers for at least some of the miles driven for business.
"While many people don't realize the value of their business miles, or that they can even deduct them at tax time, there are countless professions that spend a lot of time in the car," adds Dietrich.
"Real Estate Agents, contractors, home health care professionals, sales professionals and anyone in the growing 1099 economy should be looking closely at how many miles they're driving for business and make sure to deduct them at the end of the year."
