Millennium Health Unveils Suite of Tools to Address the Epidemic of Unsafe Opioid Use
Leading health solutions company helps health plans identify and support patients at risk.
SAN DIEGO, June 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Millennium Health, a leading health solutions company, and its population health management subsidiary, RxAnte, LLC., today announced a new suite of integrated services focused on addressing the growing epidemic of unsafe use of prescription pain medicines known as opioids.
The company's risk-based opioid management program will be offered to health plans as a new approach to managing the growing epidemic of unsafe prescription opioid use. It features automated patient risk stratification, definitive lab monitoring for at-risk individuals, and a platform for alerting potentially unsafe use. The program is the first offering from Millennium Health to integrate the company's capabilities in predictive analytics, definitive drug therapy monitoring, and provider engagement.
The cost of unsafe prescription opioid use in the United States is estimated to be $70 billion annually and leads to nearly 100,000 avoidable ER visits and 17,000 overdose deaths each year. More middle-aged Americans now die of an opioid overdose than in auto accidents or violent crimes. According to Millennium Health data analyses, opioid users meeting the defined criteria for unsafe use incur up to five times the annual medical costs of typical opioid users. Recognizing the need to better address this issue, the Pharmacy Quality Alliance, a healthcare quality measure developer, recently endorsed new quality measures related to the management of prescription pain medicines.
Until now, most efforts to address unsafe opioid use have been reactive, rather than preventive.
