Minister Fletcher discusses innovative technology and transportation
TORONTO, May 27, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Transport) today addressed Canadian and international delegates and exhibitors at the Intelligent Transportation Systems Society of Canada's (ITS Canada) 16th Annual Conference and General Meeting, May 26-29.
"ITS is a clear example of innovation in action," said Minister Fletcher. "The new and emerging technologies showcased provide exciting solutions to help Canada's transportation sector better move people and goods quickly, efficiently, safely and sustainably."
Intelligent transportation systems are a broad range of diverse technologies used to make transportation systems safer, more efficient, more reliable and more environmentally friendly, without necessarily having to physically alter existing infrastructure. Transport Canada has been promoting this technology aggressively and has provided more than $40 million in support of intelligent transportation systems projects and research in Canada.
"Incorporating new digital technologies through intelligent transportation systems will create an unprecedented awareness about what is happening throughout our transportation system at all times, providing greater benefits for Canadians and Canadian businesses," added Minister Fletcher.
The Intelligent Transportation Systems Society of Canada is a professional non-profit society that fosters ITS applications, promotes government-industry cooperation and strengthens the ITS industry. Created in 1997, ITS Canada is recognized as the most knowledgeable source for information on the intelligent transportation systems sector in Canada. Transport Canada has worked closely with ITS Canada since its inception and the two organizations continue to enjoy a strong partnership as the organization grows.
