MIT and Other 33 Universities Lead the Registration for ASC15
NEW ORLEANS, Nov. 26, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- On Nov. 18th (CST), the 2015 ASC student supercomputer challenge (hereafter ASC15, more at asc-events.org) has successfully concluded the orientation at the Supercomputing Conference 14 in New Orleans, LA. 34 international universities have registered for ASC15 on scene.
Registered universities include Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Colorado, University of Tennessee, University of California, Los Angeles, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Monash University, Leiden University, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Wuhan University, etc. National Tsing Hua University, which won the Highest Linpack Award at SC14, is the first registered university. The university has also attended ASC13 and ASC14.
"High performance computing (HPC) is playing a more and more important role in many edge-cutting researches. To promote the HPC among young talents, ASC15 would be an interesting journey for our students. Even if with some uncertainties, we believe ASC15 will motivate our students' imagination and creativity, also enhance their practical skills," commented the advisor from MIT team.

As indicated by the number of registered teams, US universities has shown the most interests. In total, 22 US universities have applied for ASC15, >50% share. Many countries have their first team for ASC, including Japan, Australia, the Netherlands, France, the United Kingdom, etc.
ASC15's preliminary contest will be held by the end of January 2015 and the final will be held in late April 2015. Since 2012, ASC has been initiated by mainland China, jointly launched and organized by experts and institutions in countries and regions including Japan, Russia, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc. With the increasing influence, many scientist from the US, the UK, and EU countries have also joined ASC. Through the challenge, ASC hopes to gather HPC talents, motivate them towards HPC, and inspire their innovation passion of Wisdom Unbound. With the impacts of ASC, many young talents will start their journey of meeting HPC, understanding HPC, and loving HPC. Some of them may finally take HPC as a career option.
In the last three years, the ASC challenge has aroused broad social concerns on the application development of supercomputer, attracted more and more talents to be engaged in the supercomputer community, and produced profound influence on the development of supercomputer industry. The challenge has become the largest supercomputing competition globally, in terms of the number and level of participating teams, the difficulty of contest questions, and the contest platform. Noted that the Tianhe-2 (#1, Top500) was the platform for ASC14, which had 82 registered teams and 16 finalists from five continents.
