MobileIron Provides Mobile Security for Munich Airport

At Munich Airport, mobility does not stop on the tarmac; it is a key concept throughout the organization. Flughafen München GmbH (FMG), the organization responsible for managing the entire airport infrastructure, relies increasingly on mobile technology for mobile email and contacts, secure content storage and sharing, as well as mobile access to the organization's intranet, web services, and SAP applications.

FMG wanted to enable employees to use corporate-owned as well as employee-owned mobile devices for work. Two years ago, with support from MobileIron partner CANCOM in Munich, Flughafen München GmbH deployed the MobileIron platform as its Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) system for managing and securing iPhones and iPads in order to enable employees to use their phones for both business and personal applications.

"MobileIron has provided us with a well-engineered and easy to use EMM system," said Michael Meister, System Engineer, IT Service Division at FMG.

With MobileIron, Flughafen München GmbH provides secure access to various web-based applications, SAP applications, and the Flughafen München GmbH intranet portal using MobileIron Tunnel, an app-specific VPN tunnel. Maximilian Metzker, senior consultant at CANCOM, the implementation partner, commented on the custom solution: "Both intranet and SAP applications can be used just as easily and seamlessly as if one is directly on the company network."

Walter Englmaier, Head of Accounting at FMG, described the cost savings: "MobileIron allowed us to move FMG's electronic purchase invoice processing, including integration with the release workflow, to the mobile platform. This made the processing workflow more cost-efficient." Linda Brummer from Aeroground GmbH, a subsidiary of FMG, added: "Using our mobile BI application (Cubeware) in the MobileIron environment gives our managers flexible anywhere access to reports and KPIs."

Wolfgang Schwaiger, Product Manager Voice, IT Service Division at FMG, explained that the implementation of mobile technology at the airport is a work in progress: "Developing the mobile infrastructure at Flughafen München GmbH is an ongoing project. The MobileIron platform provides a wide range of features -- which is needed as we continue to receive new requests from the various departments."
