More than $12 million in Grants awarded for Mid-Valley Health

WESLACO, Texas, July 31, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- More than $2.5 million in new grants was awarded at the 2^nd Community Care Awards, Thursday, July 28 in Weslaco. 13 winning proposals were selected for funding out of dozens of applicants from Knapp Community Care Foundation's (KCCF) 2015 spring grant cycle. More than $12 million in grants has now been awarded by KCCF to support local organizations and their health focused projects in the Mid-Valley.

"We're relying on these organizations to be our partners to go out and make the Mid-Valley a much better place to live, to work and to help people improve their health and lifestyles to live longer and healthier lives," explains Brian Humphries, KCCF Chairman.

The funded projects will improve and sustain the long-term health of residents in the Mid-Valley.  These projects include:

• City of Mercedes – Walking Trail and Fitness Stations - $500,000
• Easter Seals RGV – Parents As Teachers Program – Early detection of developmental delays in young children program - $182,563
• IDEA Academy – Healthy Kids Project – Introducing and reinforcing healthy lifestyle choices in school age children and their families - $115,000
• Nuestra Clinica Del Valle – Diabetes Prevention Screening Program - $345,000
• South Texas Juvenile Diabetes Association – STOMP Out Diabetes! - Diabetes Awareness/Diabetes Camp for Children - $11,500
• Team MARIO – Project P.L.A.Y. – Autism Awareness/Social Skill Events - $65,021
• Texas A & M Health Science Center – Promotoras and Families Asthma Education & Outreach Program - $374,042
• Texas A & M Health Science Center – School of Public Health – Obesity and Type II Diabetes Prevention in Colonias Program - $342,127
• Tropical Texas Behavioral Center – Crisis Services and Outreach Team Support, Behavioral Health Education - $519,000
• The University of Texas Pan American Foundation – CHECK Project - Obesity and diabetes prevention through nutrition education - $50,000
• Women Together Foundation, Inc. – Prevention Education Program - $65,281
