More Than $150 Million in AI Equipment Stolen This Year, Overhaul Report Finds

Thefts of chips, computing components, and data-center equipment are up 34% since 2024, and 92% of shipments were taken through deception

AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The artificial intelligence arms race has created a new target for cargo thieves, who have stolen more than $150 million in AI equipment this year, according to Overhaul, the global leader in in-transit supply chain visibility and risk management. Overhaul's AI Infrastructure Intel Report also found a 34% increase in the theft of data center equipment, chips, and computing components since 2024.

The methods thieves use to steal equipment are also changing from force to fraud, shaping what shippers need to watch for to stay vigilant. Overhaul's report shows that deception was used to steal 92% of high-value technology shipments. Thieves used methods such as fraudulent carrier identities, double-brokering, spoofed communications, and falsified paperwork to slip inside legitimate freight transactions and steal loads.

"AI hardware is some of the most concentrated value moving through the supply chain right now, and it's become the fastest-growing target for these criminal networks," said Barry Conlon, CEO and Founder of Overhaul. "As thieves become increasingly deceptive, visibility into a shipment alone isn't enough to stop it from being taken. Our findings give shippers the intelligence to know how crews take loads, where the equipment ends up, and what to put in place now so they can stop the next theft before it happens."

A single flagship AI server rack costs roughly $3 million, so one truckload routinely carries eight figures of value, and all of it moves on ordinary roads before it is installed. Overhaul found that individual losses now regularly exceed $30 million, with such thefts occurring weekly. The largest single theft of AI cargo on record topped $100 million.

The financial damage extends well beyond the stolen AI equipment. Overhaul found that for every dollar of stolen hardware on an insurance claim, roughly three more are lost to damages that are never on the claim, such as schedule slips, lost contract eligibility, and compliance exposure.

To further protect shipments of this value, Overhaul launched the Helix Consortium, built with Navium and Lloyd's of London underwriters. It is the first insurance solution built for AI infrastructure cargo, with a transit limit up to $75 million under a single agreement and a label tracker on every pallet for live visibility. The embedded intelligence enables proactive risk prevention across the supply chain, delivering a risk management capability that extends far beyond conventional coverage.

Overhaul has built real-time monitoring and risk response specifically for high-value AI hardware. In one case, when its platform detected that 25 of 30 pallets of restricted hardware had been redirected to an unauthorized location, it alerted the customer immediately and enabled recovery, averting $60 million in losses.
