More than $50,000 Awarded to Florida Nonprofits from Autism License Plate Proceeds

SUNRISE, Fla., Nov. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Autism Services Grants Council is pleased to announce it is providing $50,500 in grants to Florida-based nonprofit organizations providing services for individuals with autism and related disabilities.  Each of the 11 nonprofit awardees will receive grants from $2,500 - $5,000. Awarded funds were generated through the sale of the Florida "Support Autism Programs" specialty license plates.

During the summer, Florida nonprofits were invited to submit grant proposals and nearly 60 nonprofits from across the state applied for funding. Priority was given to creative and innovative approaches to serving individuals with autism and their families.

"As the number of individuals with autism and related disabilities continues to increase, our goal is to raise public awareness and continue to distribute grants to the many agencies across the state providing invaluable services," said Dennis Haas, chair of the Autism Services Grants Council.

The following organizations were awarded grants:

• Autism Pensacola (Escambia County, Florida)
• YMCA of the Suncoast (Pinellas County, Florida)
• Autism Society of Greater Orlando (Orange County, Florida)
• Personal Ponies (Palm Beach County, Florida)
• Horses for Handicapped Foundation (Pinellas County, Florida)
• First Tee – Dade Amateur Golf Association for Sandra DeLucca Development Center (Miami-Dade County, Florida)
• Deliver the Dream (Broward County, Florida)
• The Social Cog Community Development Initiative (Miami-Dade County, Florida)
• Prosperity Life Planning (Palm Beach County, Florida)
• Youth Environmental Alliance (Broward County, Florida)
• Soccer Association of Boca Raton (Palm Beach County, Florida)

Due to the success of last year's grants and increased revenue provided by the sale of the "Support Autism Programs" specialty license plate, the Autism Services Grants Council is able to provide twice the amount of funding to awardees this year. Last year was the first year grants were administered.

In 2009, the Florida Legislature authorized the "Support Autism Services" specialty license plate and provided for the creation of the Autism Services Grants Council. The Council oversees a grants process to fund service programs for individuals with autism and related disabilities and their families throughout the state.
