Morgan & Morgan Announces Investigation into Continental Automotive Systems Air Bags
TAMPA, Fla., Feb. 22, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Morgan & Morgan announced that it is investigating potential lawsuits on behalf of consumers who purchased certain vehicles with air bag control units manufactured by Continental Automotive Systems, Inc.
The manufacturer recently recalled certain air bag control units made between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2010 due to a potentially corrosive power supply component that could result in the failure of the unit. This can affect the performance of safety systems, such as seatbelt pretensioners and air bags, which either do not deploy or deploy unexpectedly.
The recall will affect more than 5 million people worldwide, said Mary Arraf, a spokeswoman for the supplier. Continental Automotive did not know how many of those five million vehicles are in the United States but according to Ms. Arraf that it "potentially is less than two million."
The car manufacturers that have announced a recall are Honda, Fiat Chrysler and Mercedes-Benz. The following models have been recalled as a result of the air bag control units in question:
2008-10 Honda Accord
2009 Dodge Journey
2008-09 Dodge Grand Caravan
2008-09 Chrysler Town and Country
2009 Volkswagen Routan
2008-09 Mercedes-Benz C Class
2008-09 Mercedes-Benz GLK Class
Volvo and Mazda have also been notified by Continental Automotive but are waiting to announce a recall pending an internal investigation. According to the car manufacturers, nine injuries have been confirmed due to the malfunction while 74 other allegations of injury linked to the defect remain unconfirmed.
Owners of the recalled models may be able to file lawsuits seeking compensation for injuries or a number of other losses. Morgan & Morgan is urging anyone who has purchased one of the affected vehicles to learn more by visiting this page or calling Morgan & Morgan's Complex Litigation Group at 1 (813) 223-5505.
