Moyer Foundation Congratulates Co-Founder's Return to Major League Baseball
Pitcher and Philanthropist Jamie Moyer, 49, Joins Rockies
PHILADELPHIA, April 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Baby boomers nationwide are not the only ones rejoicing about pitcher and philanthropist Jamie Moyer's return to Major League Baseball at the age of 49. The announcement Friday that he was named to the starting rotation by the Colorado Rockies and will pitch in the opening series in Houston on April 7, also reverberated in the lives of children in distress that have been helped through The Moyer Foundation, founded in 2000 with his wife, Karen.
The Moyer Foundation's mission is to empower children in distress by providing education and support – helping them to live healthy and inspired lives. The Foundation's officials expect the spotlight shining on Jamie Moyer as he steps back up on the mound will help attract increased funding for the organization's network of 40 free bereavement camps called Camp Erin™ for children and teens grieving the death of someone close to them, and the Foundation's four Camp Mariposa™ – free camps for children living with drug or alcohol addiction in their families. Together, these free programs provide support to over 3,000 children annually.
If Moyer wins a regular season game for the Rox, he'll be the oldest pitcher in MLB history to do so.
For The Moyer Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit, their president and co-founder's entry back onto the sports pages will help spotlight the critical need to provide support for the nation's estimated 1.5 million children who have lost a parent, as well as the 8.3 million children living with at least one parent in need of treatment for alcohol or drug dependency.
"We're all human beings and whether it's in our immediate or extended family or friends, we all know somebody that has been in one of these situations," said Moyer. "We hope to provide children the ability to develop the skills they need to cope and break the cycle of addiction."
