Nassau County School District Conducts Study That Reduces Asthma/Allergy Symptoms in School Children
AGT's Health Risk Management System installed in Fernandina Beach High School in North Florida
SOUTH BEND, Ind., May 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Nassau County School District in North Florida can be considered a progressive institution. When it comes to the health and well-being of the students and faculty, school superintendent Dr. John Ruis takes pride in investing in technology that can improve the environment for the children. Like most school districts in the state of Florida, Nassau District Schools have seen occasional air quality issues. With high humidity, mold and fungus grows rapidly and can exacerbate asthma and allergy symptoms. The solution proved to be the Health Risk Management System or HRMS manufactured by American Green Technology® (AGT). The patented environmental disinfection system is designed as a light fixture and utilizes UV-C to reduce mold, viruses and bacteria that travel on air currents. A study conducted using the HRMS dramatically minimized the asthma and allergy symptoms of both students and teachers in just two weeks of use.
"I've been superintendent here for 22 years and during that period of time we would have classrooms where some of the employees were concerned about the air quality in their work space," said Dr. John Ruis, Superintendent of Nassau County School District. "The results that came from the study indicated that the airborne pathogens had been reduced drastically once the HRMS units were installed in those classrooms."
"The kids seem to be a little healthier and feeling better and a few teachers who have upper respiratory issues say they aren't as pronounced as they were experiencing before," continued Dr. Ruis. "If children are able to attend school on a more regular basis by avoiding illness, it could result in increased student achievement."
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), approximately 7 million children suffer from asthma. On average, one out of every 10 school-age child has asthma and the percentage is rising more rapidly in preschool-age children than any other age group.
"Fernandina Beach High School's first installation is in a classroom for physically and mentally challenged students that range in age from 5-21. All of them are wheelchair bound and have fragile immune systems, so placing the HRMS systems in their room was an excellent start," said Danny Bogar, CEO of AGT. "AGT is extremely proud to do our part to keep kids healthy and coming to school."
Another significant finding of the study conducted by Kyler Lunman of Airborne Pathogen Removal found that four students came to school with 103 degree temperatures and flu-like symptoms, and yet did not get any other students sick. According to the teacher, who has years of experience in the classroom, that has never occurred before – where sick students didn't infect other students.
