Nasuni names Chief Scientist, CTO and Vice President of engineering

NATICK, Mass., March 31, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Nasuni^®, the industry's leading provider of Cloud NAS to the distributed enterprise, today announced the promotion of three long-time leaders within its engineering organization.  The appointments reflect each recipient's singular impact on the company and its ongoing success.  In 2015, the terabytes of file data under management on Nasuni's cloud NAS increased by 111 percent while the company and its partners achieved record growth with new and existing customers.

The promotions included:

• David Shaw to Chief Science Officer: The primary architect of Nasuni's cloud NAS, Shaw is an acknowledged expert on the security of file systems who holds numerous patents for distributed data storage and other disciplines. As chief science officer he will oversee Nasuni's efforts to develop new security innovations while complementing the efforts of the office of the CTO. Shaw joined Nasuni in 2009 after holding development positions at Hitachi Data Systems and Archivas. Earlier in his career, he served as a streaming architect at Akamai, where he designed and implemented the live streaming system used for video and audio events. For nearly 15 years, he has also been a core developer in the GnuPG Project, an effort to create a free and portable implementation of the OpenPGP standard. Shaw began his career in cinematography after graduating from the School of Visual Arts and holds a master's in computer science from The John Hopkins University.
  
  
• Russell Neufeld to Chief Technology Officer: As CTO Neufeld will oversee Nasuni's ongoing and future development operations and its technical integration with public cloud service providers. A veteran developer, Neufeld joined Nasuni in 2009 after serving as a principal software engineer at Hitachi Data Systems, a role that built on an already mature concentration on enterprise storage that began when he joined Archivas in 2003. Neufeld started his development career at IBM, where he worked on compilers before his interest in Java led him to Natural Intelligence and, later, Microsoft. He subsequently joined Abuzz, an early social networking company that was acquired by The New York Times, where Neufeld developed some of the first scalable, customer-focused Web applications. This experience proved pivotal for his role in designing and implementing the Nasuni Operations Center, a global lock server with back-end services that makes Nasuni's cloud NAS exceptionally intuitive for IT and end-users. Neufeld has a degree in mathematics from the University of Michigan.
  
  
• Matt McDonald to Vice President of Engineering: As vice president of engineering McDonald will oversee future innovations for the Nasuni Filer and Nasuni Mobile, while managing development and release schedules. McDonald joined Nasuni in 2010 and played a key role building the backbone of the company's global file system, UniFS. In the 15 years that span his focus on enterprise storage, he amassed a number of patents on distributed object storage. McDonald began his career at Data General's CLARiiON group prior to its acquisition by EMC. Later he worked at EMC Centera, one of the first large-scale distributed object storage systems. He has a bachelor's degree in computer science from the University of Massachusetts in Lowell and will receive his Masters in Business from Babson College in May.
