National Geographic Emerging Explorer Shah Selbe to Talk STEM with Fresno-Area Students
Two-Day Speaking Tour will Focus on Role of Engineering, Technology in Wildlife Conservation
FRESNO, Calif., Sept. 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Shah Selbe, engineer, conservation technologist, and National Geographic Emerging Explorer, in partnership with National Geographic Learning (NGL), part of Cengage Learning, will visit with Fresno area students September 24-25 as part of a two-day speaking tour. Selbe will discuss his work in the fields of conservation and bring attention to the major role STEM plays in these efforts.

Made possible through the work of NGL, Fresno Unified School District, SAM Academy in Sanger, and the Central Valley Science Project. Selbe's speaking tour will include lunch with administrators, students, parents at SAM Academy in Sanger and a visit to two Fresno Unified High Schools to discuss with students the careers and opportunities available in the fields of STEM. Selbe will also visit California State University (CSU), Fresno to deliver the presentation "Engineering for Good: Find Your Niche, Help the World" detailing the role of engineering and technology in wildlife conservation efforts.
Shah Selbe is an engineer and conservation technologist who works with communities, NGOs and developing countries to identify and deploy technologies that can help with their greatest conservation challenges. He was recognized for this work by the National Geographic Society's Emerging Explorers program.
Selbe founded Conservify in order to bring open source technologies into conservation. He is principal investigator for SoarOcean, a project for which he received a grant from the LEX-NG Fund to use low cost conservation drones for coastal monitoring. He is also project engineer/technologist for the Okavango Wilderness Project, an ambitious effort supported by National Geographic to create an open source environmental monitoring mesh network to monitor Botswana's pristine Okavango Delta.
NGL sponsored events, such as this speaking tour, provide an opportunity to engage students and bring the world of science into the classroom. Through this program, students have the ability to apply their lessons to real world situations and meet the explorers they learn about in the classroom.
