National Home Performance Council Urges World Mayors to Look to Building Energy Efficiency to Meet Mexico City Pact Goals
WASHINGTON, Nov. 24, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Home Performance Council welcomes The Cities' Global Climate Change Pact, also known as "The Mexico City Pact," announced at the Mayor's World Climate Change Summit in Mexico City on Sunday and urges the Mayors to meet their commitments through energy efficiency in homes and buildings.
"It is important that local leaders from around the world commit to addressing climate change and, with energy efficiency, every locality can do their part," said Kara Saul Rinaldi, Executive Director of the National Home Performance Council. "Energy efficiency is the fastest, cleanest, most cost-effective way for these local governments to take action and NHPC is glad to see advancing energy efficiency is noted in the commitments. We urge local governments to first advance energy efficiency policies and measures in order to achieve their greenhouse gas reduction goals."
The Mexico City Pact was signed by 138 mayors who attended the Mayors' World Climate Change Summit in Mexico City on Sunday. In it, the mayors acknowledge their concerns about climate change and the role of local governments while committing to ten actions to set their cities on a sustainable path. Energy efficiency is noted in the second commitment to adopt and implement local climate mitigation measures designed to achieve voluntary reduction targets.
The mission of the National Home Performance Council is to encourage implementation of whole-house retrofits for increased home energy performance and to facilitate coordination among federal governmental agencies, utilities, state energy offices, contractors and other relevant participants to achieve improved whole-house energy performance.
