National Police Association Supports Petition Calling on Memphis DA to Drop Lawsuit Over Task Force Case Reporting
INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Police Association (NPA) supports the Change.org petition "Stop Memphis DA from Protecting Criminals," calling on Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy to withdraw his lawsuit challenging Tennessee's Memphis Safe Task Force Accountability Act.
Memphis families deserve to know what happens after officers make an arrest. When a serious task-force case is pleaded down, dismissed, or declined, it should be followed by an accounting. Tennessee enacted a reporting requirement. Mulroy has gone to court to fight it.
Officers risking their lives to apprehend dangerous suspects deserve a justice system that accounts for what happens to those cases. The citizens whose safety hangs in the balance deserve more than an arrest announcement followed by unanswered questions.
"The Memphis Safe Task Force has located missing children, seized more than 1,700 illegal firearms, and made more than 10,000 arrests," said National Police Association President Eddie Hutchison. "These officers are doing dangerous work to reclaim streets for decent citizens. That work deserves prosecution and accountability. Why would the DA hide task-force cases that are pleaded down, dismissed, or declined?" Hutchison added.
Memphis belongs to its law-abiding residents, to the families raising children, and the shopkeepers trying to keep their doors open. Their security is the purpose of the criminal justice system. Their demand for accountability deserves an answer.
The Memphis Safe Task Force brings together federal, state, and local law enforcement, with support from the Tennessee National Guard. The challenged statute requires reporting of specified decisions in qualifying serious-offense cases originating with the task force, including plea agreements, charge reductions, dismissals, and decisions not to prosecute.
Reports go to the attorney general, legislative leaders, the District Attorneys General Conference, and the U.S. attorney. The law specifies reporting within 10 business days of the action, with monthly compilations.
The NPA urges police supporters to sign the petition calling for Mulroy to withdraw the lawsuit and allow the reporting law to operate. Prosecutorial authority carries public responsibility. The decisions that follow an arrest matter, and those entrusted with making them should provide the required accounting.
