National Press Club Honors The New York Times with John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award for Defending First Amendment Rights

WASHINGTON, Oct. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Press Club will award The New York Times with its highest honor for press freedom, the John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award, for exemplifying the courage and institutional resolve essential to a free and independent press.

The National Press Club Board recognizes The New York Times for its sustained commitment to challenge restrictive anti-press policies at the Pentagon through the courts. By advocating for the rights of reporters to freely cover the Pentagon, The Times has courageously pushed back against department attempts to restrict access to those most involved in major national security decisions – even as the U.S. remains engaged in a major war with Iran, the Board noted.

"At a time when access to our government and source protections are being undermined by the Trump administration and challenged in courts, The New York Times has stood firm, not just for its own journalists, but for the American public's right to know," said Mark Schoeff Jr., president of the National Press Club. "The Times has demonstrated exactly what the Aubuchon Award is about: the refusal to yield when press freedom is under threat. We are proud to recognize the institution's courage with our highest honor."

The Times has led the fight against reporting restrictions at the Pentagon, fiercely defending the First Amendment rights of its reporters and those of the entire Pentagon Press Corps. In December 2025, The Times sued to block new press rules that curtailed reporters' ability to interview department sources unauthorized to speak to the media – in effect, forcing reporters to rely on approved Pentagon talking points.

New York Times reporters had previously joined nearly every traditional media outlet in refusing to sign on to the rules, surrendering their press passes and walking away from their desks in protest. In March 2026, a federal judge found the Pentagon's restrictions unconstitutional and ordered the Pentagon to restore press passes to Times reporters and reverse the Pentagon's anti-press policies. The case is currently being appealed by the Pentagon.

The Times once again filed suit against the Pentagon in May 2026, challenging requirements for journalists to be accompanied by an official escort while present in the building. The Times argued that escort requirements did not improve national security, and harmed journalists' ability to freely do their jobs. The restrictions were halted by a district court in June, but were temporarily reinstated by an appellate court in July as the Times's case proceeds.

"A free press cannot fulfill its constitutional role if access to public officials and government works is conditioned on administrative approval. Defending the rights of our journalists at the Pentagon was essential to ensuring the public receives transparent, independent news during a critical time for our nation," said David McCraw, Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel of The New York Times. 

In the aftermath of The New York Times's resolute actions in defense of First Amendment rights, it found itself again challenged in court by the Trump administration on another matter a few months later. Its journalists were served with subpoenas and legal pressure to reveal confidential sources, underscoring the real risks involved in accountability reporting. 

On July 10, five New York Times journalists were issued subpoenas linked to confidential sources quoted in a story that raised security concerns about the Qatari-donated jet operating as Air Force One by President Donald J. Trump. The journalists also saw their phone records and text messages subpoenaed, including the phone records of the Times journalists' relatives.

Once again, The Times backed its journalists in court, and the Trump administration later withdrew the subpoenas after a judge threatened to quash them, reasserting the precedent that journalists cannot be targeted merely for their reporting practices.

The John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award is named for a former National Press Club president who fervently advocated for press freedom. Each year, the Club's Board of Governors selects both a domestic and an international honoree. By selecting The New York Times as the domestic honoree, the Club highlights the importance of outlets to consistently stand for First Amendment rights of their reporters, and to hold any administration that seeks to restrict a free and independent press to account, including, when necessary, in court.

The gala dinner is a fundraiser for the Club's nonprofit affiliate, the National Press Club Journalism Institute, which produces training to equip journalists with skills and standards to inform the public in ways that inspire civic engagement.
