National University Golf Instructor Qualifies for U.S. Senior Open Championship

SAN DIEGO, July 9, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- National University Golf Academy Director of Instruction, Ted Norby, has qualified and will be competing in the 2014 U.S. Senior Open Championship, to be held at Oak Tree National, in Edmond, Oklahoma, July 10-13. Ted shot an impressive 69 during the United States Golf Association (USGA) sectional qualifier on Monday, June 23 at the Vista Valley Golf Course in Vista, California.

Over 2,700 entries were accepted for the 2014 U.S. Senior Open.  The U.S. Senior Open is open to professional golfers and amateurs with a Handicap Index® not exceeding 3.4 who are 50 years of age at the start of championship play. Conducted over 18 holes, sectional qualifying was held at 34 sites across the United States between June 12 and June 24. In addition, places in the 156-player field are reserved for eligible winners of official PGA Tour and Champions Tour events in the weeks remaining before the 2014 U.S. Senior Open.

As Director of Instruction for the National University Golf Academy, Ted provides personalized instruction to students pursuing a degree in Professional Golf Management, Sport Psychology, Business or Performance Psychology.  Prior to joining the National University Golf Academy, Ted served as an instructor at the Aviara Golf Academy for over fifteen years. During a two-year sabbatical from Aviara in 1995 and 1996, Ted went back to playing professionally on various mini tours, including the Nike and Canadian tours.

Ted turned professional in 1986 and played on the mini tours until a wrist injury forced him to find another source of income. Instructing was a natural progression. Starting to play at the age of 14, Ted became serious about the game at 16. Two years of high school golf and playing at U.C. Irvine led Ted to begin studying and working on various theories of the golf swing. After college, Ted worked on his game with a number of instructors, including Hank Haney and Eddie Merrins. Ted started working with Kip Puterbaugh on his game in 1988 and started playing better in larger tournaments, winning a number of events along the way.

During his playing career, Ted qualified for several tour events, including the U.S. Open in 1990. Turning to teaching golf full-time in 1992, Ted found a passion for finding ways for beginners, novices and experts to enjoy the game more. Ted's pupils include PGA Tour winner Dennis Paulson, LPGA Tour winner Eun Jung Yi, San Diego State All American and Web.com player Aaron Goldberg, and NCAA team champion Rachel Morris. Ted has had articles in Golf Tips Magazine and is an established local golf expert who regularly provides commentary for television news and radio shows.
