Nation's Emergency Physicians Discuss Future of Emergency Medicine in Seattle, October 14-17

ACEP13 To Feature the World's Most Comprehensive and Groundbreaking Emergency Medical Education

WASHINGTON, Sept. 17, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- More than 6,000 emergency physicians from across the nation will be in Seattle for the ACEP 2013 Scientific Assembly at the Washington State Convention Center from October 14 to 17. This year's conference — which comes at a critical juncture in the evolution of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA)—will present the most current information and impact of the ACA on emergency medicine.

Join five distinguished women physicians as they review the legacy of women physicians in medicine and forecast the future of "Women in Emergency Medicine" (James D. Mills, Jr. Memorial Lecture).  Panelists Diane M. Birnbaumer, MD, FACEP (Moderator); Sheryl Heron, MD, MPH, FACEP; Gillian Schmitz, MD, FACEP; Ghazala Q. Sharieff, MD, MBA, FACEP; and Mary Jo Wagner, MD, FACEP will identify practical tips on effective mentoring and recognize leadership strategy themes that guide practice. The panel also will explore methods to close the gender gap both in the general distribution of EPs and positions of leadership. 

Wednesday, October 16
8:00 a.m. to 9:25 a.m., Room 6E, Washington State Convention Center
Emergency physicians who responded to the Boston Marathon bombing will present "Boston Marathon Bombing: Lives Saved, Lessons Learned."  The following presenters—Vikhyat S. Bebarta, MD, FACEP (Moderator); Eric Goralnick, MD; Andrew S. Ulrich, MD, FACEP; and Richard E. Wolfe, MD, FACEP—will discuss the response of Boston area hospitals and pre-hospital personnel as they sprang into action, immediately triaging and caring for scores of victims.  The panel discussion will provide a first-hand account of the response from both the pre-hospital and hospital perspective. 

Wednesday, October 16

Join a panel discussion on "Reducing Costs and Expenses of the Health Care System" (Colin C. Rorrie, Jr., Lecture).  ACEP's Cost Effective Care Task Force has identified evidence-based best practices in emergency medicine that can reduce the cost of care without sacrificing quality of care. Michael J. Gerardi, MD, FAAP, FACEP; Dennis M. Beck, MD, FACEP; Brent Asplin, MD, MPH, FACEP; and Jessie Pines, MD, MBA, FACEP will address some of their recommendations.  

Research Forum (Monday, October 14, and Tuesday, October 15
7:00 am to 5:00 pm in Level 3, The Conference Center
The Research Forum showcases original emergency medicine research with oral and poster presentations. 

There will be two "State-of-the-Art Presentations" to discuss abstracts with significant implications for emergency medicine practice or research: 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm, on October 14, and 8:00 am to 8:30 am on October 15 — both in Room 301 of The Conference Center.

From noon to 1 p.m., the Research Forum Awards Luncheon will feature a session on the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute's push for comparative effectiveness research. The speaker will be Dr. Erik Hess, and the event will take place in Room 302 of The Conference Center.

The Research Forum will close on October 15 with a panel session highlighting some of the most significant research of the forum: "Cutting Edge: Highlights of Emergency Medicine Research," from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Room 301 of The Conference Center.
