Natural Color Coalition Announces Winners of Color Me with Love Contest
WASHINGTON, March 21, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Color Coalition announced today the winners of the Color Me with Love Video Contest. Entrants were asked to submit short video "love letters" asking brands they love that use artificial dyes in their products to switch to natural colors. The list of products included JELL-O, Starburst, Cheetos, Skittles, Fla-Vor-Ice, Kool-Aid, and M&Ms. Prizes included a Surface Pro 6 pad, a $500 Amazon gift card, and 4 Google Home Hubs. Winners were notified by email and winning videos can be seen at www.naturalcolorcoalition.com/contest.
The Natural Color Coalition is an initiative of the consumer action group, Citizens for Health (CFH), which is one of the country's oldest and most respected organizations addressing various health and wellness issues. The contest was paired with a petition asking brands to switch from artificial dyes to natural colors. "We had submissions to the video contest from all over the country. We also had multiple inquiries about entering from other countries, showing this is a global issue," said CFH President Jim Turner.
In the USA, unlike Europe, there is still a debate raging about the safety of artificial dyes in foods and other items like fabrics, cosmetics and beverages. However, we are seeing more and more legislation popping up at the State level proposing that brands MUST label all products with artificial dyes with obvious health warning labels. Many countries in Europe and Asia have had this requirement in place since 2003. Interesting item to note is that many of those effected products were converted to natural colors and sold in Europe and Asia to avoid the negative public relations messaging of the warning labels, but the artificial dye versions are still sold in the USA.
