Funding Process Targets Connections, Commercialization, Jobs
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., March 5, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Life-science companies, start-ups, event sponsors and researchers received $2.9 million in loans and grants from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center during its second fiscal quarter.
Since it was established in 1984, NCBiotech awards have helped North Carolina become the nation's third-largest biotech state, with more than 500 life-science companies employing more than 58,000.
The awards for the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2012 included:
$250,000 for a Strategic Growth Loan to G1 Therapeutics, of Chapel Hill.
$390,160 for Small Business Research Loans including $75,000 to Qualiber, also of Chapel Hill; $250,000 to Aerial BioPharma of Morrisville; and $65,160 to Galaxy Diagnostics, of Research Triangle Park.
$1,170,061 for Multidisciplinary Research Grants including $300,000 each to Gideon Wasserberg, of the University North Carolina Greensboro, to develop a trap for sand flies; to Wolfgang Bergmeier, of UNC-Chapel Hill, to study platelet activation in vascular injury; and Gregory Palmer, Ph.D., of the Duke University Medical Center, to study the role of myeloid cells in tumor growth and therapy. Reza Ghiladi, Ph.D., of North Carolina State University, was awarded $270,061 to explore the use of cellulose from wood deconstruction in biofuels.
$100,000 for Company Inception Loans ($50,000 each) to Chapel Hill-based Biodeptronix to help launch its portable air-quality monitoring instrument that uses living human lung cells; and to Benson Hill Biosystems, advancing biotech-based traits to increase crop yields.
$50,000 for an Economic Development Award to Guilford County to support the expansion of Piedmont Pharmaceuticals.
$195,525 for Collaborative Funding Grants including $95,525 to Allan Brown, Ph.D., at NCSU, to evaluate increased lutein in commercial broccoli; and $100,000 to Wolfgang Liedtke, M.D., Ph.D., at Duke, to enhance transdermal delivery of therapy-resistant pain meds.
$50,000 for a Technology Enhancement Grant to Kelly Parsons, Ph.D., of UNC-Chapel Hill, to advance development of a high-throughput screening assay for new drugs.
$700,000 for a Centers of Innovation Grant Tranche for the N.C. Marine Bio-Technologies Center of Innovation.
$7,341 for Biotechnology Event Sponsorships
$14,700 for Biotechnology Meeting Grants
