NAC deployments are increasing as mid-sized and enterprise networks are expanding to allow more devices per employee and support the bring-your-own-device trend. While virtual appliances have been gaining traction in the enterprise space, NAC security-as-a-service offerings are capturing the interest of companies in the small- to medium-sized business segment.

Encouraged by these trends, NAC platforms are being integrated with other network defense tools. Many of the leading NAC providers already have mechanisms which allow the network and endpoint security information to be sent to other networks, applications and security platforms. As part of the overall mechanism, these NAC systems can also receive data from other platforms.

"Such developments have enhanced the context and resulting control of both NAC and other systems," noted Kissel. "Thus, NAC will be able to further reduce the available attack surface that can be intruded."

However, the trend of integrating NAC with other network security platforms is a double-edged sword as the operational siloes between technologies are becoming less apparent. Moreover, companies that are currently NAC integration partners could become competitors, offering different types of endpoint visibility and posture assessment products through licensing plans.

Nevertheless, NAC vendors must continue to engage in integration activity and enter partnerships with other security platform providers, cloud application providers, and players operating in virtual environments. They must also focus on ease of deployment, scalability, and pricing to differentiate from the competition.
