CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas, Feb. 12, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- PHYSICIANS PREMIER EMERGENCY ROOM announced a recent life-saving event owed fundamentally to the patient going to the closest Emergency Room. On November 7, 2018 Mary Cadena arrived at Physicians Premier ER in Bastrop, Texas at 9:00pm. She traveled 18 miles to the ER from Elgin, Texas. At 9:20pm, Mary spontaneously delivered a five-week preterm baby boy. Mary suffered significant post-partum hemorrhaging and required critical care in order to survive. Her scheduled delivery location was in Austin, about an hour's drive from Elgin through Austin traffic or 25 miles.
Physicians Premier ER Bastrop, which opened its doors September 2018, provided Mary with vital resuscitation and the medications necessary to save her life. Additionally, its medical care partners, PHI Helicopter Service, were able to deliver additional blood products via private car to the ER facility as helicopters were grounded due to weather. Once stabilized a few hours later, Mary was transported via a maternal transport team and her 6 lb. baby boy via a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit transport team to Seton Medical Center in Austin, Texas.
Treating ER Physician, Dr. Joe Aldrich, confirmed, "We don't normally deliver babies in the ER; however, Mary made the right choice and did not second guess her situation. We are glad she was able to get to us as quickly as she did. Both Mary and her son were released a few days later and are doing well."
Physicians Premier ER facilities treat hundreds of patients each year, such as Mary, who have Medicare, Medicaid, or Tricare without any compensation. Unfortunately, many patients with these types of insurance completely avoid closer and safer freestanding emergency centers like Physicians Premier because these ERs are not currently recognized by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
Physicians Premier ER fully supports the Emergency Room Improvement Act (S. 3531) introduced to Congress in October 2018, which would recognize Medicare, Medicaid and Tricare beneficiary treatment to freestanding emergency medical centers (FEMCs) such as Physicians Premier ER.
There are more than 500 Freestanding Emergency Medical Centers across the United States and most were established after 2010. FEMCs offer high-quality emergency medical care to patients in fully licensed facilities. Just as hospital-based ERs operate 24/7 and have emergency-trained physicians on-site at all times, so do FEMCs.
