Verizon stated that ten digit dialing is necessary as the telecommunication providers in the area prepare for the introduction of Northeastern Pennsylvania's new area code: 272, known as an "overlay," in October 2013. According to the Company, introduction of the new code will serve the same geographic boundary as the current 570 area code and will eliminate the need to split the existing area code into small areas.
