New Home Depot Survey Reveals America's Must-Do Spring Projects

Spring Black Friday Set to Run April 3-16

ATLANTA, March 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Today is the first official day of spring, but most homeowners and renters agree that spring begins when they start their first home project (64%), according to a new survey conducted by Reputation Leaders for The Home Depot. The survey revealed that spring cleaning marks the start of the season in most households. Among those surveyed, the most common tasks tackled nationwide are cleaning windows and screens, grill cleaning and weeding or clearing out the garden, highlighting a focus on freshening up both indoor and outdoor spaces as the new season begins.

The Home Depot unveiled new data on home improvement projects, as well as project inspiration and recommendations in its first What Are You Working On? – Spring Project Report. Key findings uncovered:

• Cleaning is Good for the Soul: 65% of homeowners and renters actually look forward to spring cleaning. A large majority (85%) say it benefits their mental health and well-being and that they feel a sense of accomplishment once it's done (80%).
• Cutting the Cord: From edging the lawn to building a deck, power tools help you to complete your spring projects. Among people planning to use power tools, cordless tools (76%) are preferred over corded ones.
• Planting Happiness: Among those planning gardening projects, 68% say planting and gardening makes them happy, and 65% believe it benefits their health and wellness. Nearly half (49%) identify as "plant parents." If you're intent on refreshing the mulch in your garden, you're not alone. Among people planning landscaping projects, more than half (52%) want to add or refresh mulch in garden beds, making it the most common landscaping task for 2025.
• Mastering the Grill: Warm weather is the perfect time to fire up the grill, but as patios become more of an extension of the home, 62% of homeowners and renters grill year-round, even during winter holidays (61%).  Homeowners agree grilling is a team sport -- 1 in 5 people would grill more often if it meant they would get to gather with friends and family.

METHODOLOGY: To understand which Spring projects consumers are planning to tackle in 2025, The Home Depot commissioned the What Are You Working On? - Spring Project Report. In partnership with independent research firm, Reputation Leaders, the company conducted a survey among 5,000 American adults aged 21 and older, across homeowners or renters, who have undertaken a home improvement or spring-cleaning project in the last year. Survey respondents were recruited evenly across the 50 US states, with 100 adult respondents from each state. Additionally, the sample is comprised of homeowners (79%) and renters (21%), and men (54%) and women (46%).
