New measure assesses vocabulary and oral language development across the lifespan
LUTZ, Fla., April 2, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- PAR is pleased to announce the release of the Vocabulary Assessment Scales™–Expressive (VAS™-E) and Vocabulary Assessment Scales™–Receptive (VAS™-R). Together, the measures present photographs to help users evaluate clients' vocabulary and oral language development.
VAS stimulus books, available digitally or on paper, contain full-color digital photographs, which offer a higher degree of realism than line drawings traditionally offered in picture vocabulary tests. According to the test's author, Rebecca Gerhardstein Nader, PhD, the inclusion of photographs may strengthen the ecological validity of the measure.
"Many researchers and clinicians believe that photographs are better suited for use with beginning communicators, individuals with moderate to severe cognitive disabilities, and individuals with acquired communication disorders than color line drawings, making the VAS more ecologically valid and iconistic than many of its competitors," Gerhardstein Nader said. Iconicity is the level of similarity between a symbol and its referent.
Several types of scores are included. Composite and discrepancy scores allow users to more easily interpret expressive and receptive scores, and change scores highlight differences in test scores from one testing time to another. Co-normed, equivalent forms of the VAS-E and VAS-R are available.
The instrument is designed for clients of nearly any age. Age- and grade-based norms are included for individuals ages 2.5 to 95 years.
