Guest and leadership coach Rae Ringel reveals three keys to leading with calm and clarity in "swirly" times
MENLO PARK, Calif., Oct. 14, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- What does it take to stay grounded when the world won't stop spinning? In the debut episode of How We Future with Lisa Kay Solomon, leadership coach and Harvard Business Review contributor Rae Ringel shares three transformative tools for leading with calm, clarity, and courage in what she calls "swirly times"—those moments when everything feels in flux, emotions are running high, and change seems faster than our ability to process it.
Rae Ringel's Three Keys to Finding Our Way Through the Swirl
- Fear is a future-based emotion.
"Fear is often anticipated loss," Ringel explains. "It's rarely about the exact moment we're in. The first step is to separate what's happening now from what you're projecting into the future—and remember, for now is not forever." - You can't always control feelings, but you can train your thought habits.
Ringel introduces her most-used coaching framework, the Critical Thinking Path, which helps leaders identify the thoughts driving their feelings, actions, and results. "It's not 'fake it till you make it,'" she says. "It's think it till you become it, speak it till you become it." - Behind every complaint is an unspoken request.
A tiny reframe—like turning "That ambulance siren is too loud" into "I hope they get there on time"—can shift irritation to gratitude. "Clarity is kindness," Ringel reminds listeners. "When we turn complaints into clear, time-bound requests, we create relief, connection, and results."
That spirit of reframing lies at the heart of How We Future—a new podcast built on the belief that the future is something we actively shape every day. Each episode invites listeners to notice how our attention, conversations, and choices influence what comes next—and to take small, intentional steps toward better futures.
"Too often, the future is treated as something that happens to us," says host Lisa Kay Solomon. "Rae reminds us that we shape the future—through our attention, our thought habits, and the questions we ask."
