New Podcast "The Future Is Smaller" Explores Declining School Enrollment and What New Orleans Can Teach Other Cities

New Schools for New Orleans series examines demographic change, enrollment decline, and the future of public education

NEW ORLEANS, Oct. 15, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Across the country, public school systems are confronting a new reality: fewer students, tighter budgets, and difficult decisions about how to sustain strong schools as enrollment declines.

A new podcast from New Schools for New Orleans (NSNO), "The Future Is Smaller: What New Orleans Learned Before America Had To," examines these challenges through the experience of a city already navigating them. Launching October 15, the series brings together education leaders, researchers, school operators, students, and families to explore how demographic shifts affect school finances and academic opportunities, and what communities can do to prepare for a smaller future.

The series also addresses a critical question facing school leaders and districts: how to protect and build upon academic progress while simultaneously reshaping school systems for a smaller student population.

The first episode, "The Last Miss Douglass," premieres October 15, with new episodes released monthly on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, and other platforms.

A National Challenge New Orleans Is Already Navigating
The number of school-age children is declining in communities across the country, driven by falling birth rates, population shifts, migration, and other demographic changes. For school systems largely funded based on student enrollment, those shifts can have significant consequences. In New Orleans, those pressures are already visible.

Over the past five years, K–8 enrollment has declined approximately 9%, while ninth-grade enrollment in 2026 is approximately 11% lower than in 2022. Meanwhile, New Orleans recorded its fifth consecutive year of academic growth on Louisiana's state assessments in 2026, improving three percentage points in students achieving Mastery or above.

The podcast builds on NSNO's longstanding work to help New Orleans public schools plan for a more sustainable system. Since 2022, NSNO has published regular analyses of enrollment, school capacity, and financial trends, helping school leaders, policymakers, and the public understand how demographic shifts are affecting schools today and what they could mean for the future.
