New Vernier Summer Workshops Target Specific Science Disciplines for Increased Learning Opportunities

Hands-On Workshops Focus on Integrating Data Acquisition and Analysis as well as Sensor Technology into Science Education

BEAVERTON, Ore., April 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Summer workshops offered by Vernier Software & Technology will include 2-day, subject-specific workshops for high school and new college institutes for science instructors.  

Vernier's new College Institutes place special emphasis on hands-on experiments for higher education science and the techniques to incorporate probeware into college laboratories. All College Institutes are two days in length.

The College Physics Institute will survey all data-acquisition and video tools offered by Vernier. Participants will learn both basic and advanced skills using Vernier data-acquisition software including configuring graphs, performing custom curve fits, and setting up calculated columns and customized data-collection modes. In addition, participants will learn how to use the LabQuest for video capture and analysis. Registration includes a copy of Physics with Video Analysis.

In the College Chemistry Institute Vernier and Flinn Scientific team up to give chemistry laboratory instructors twelve different experiments in two days. Experiments in thermodynamics, kinetics, acid-base reactivity, and equilibrium will be performed. In addition, special experiments explore spectroscopy and gas chromatography. All participants will receive a copy of Advanced Chemistry with Vernier.

Participants of the College Biology Institute will conduct a series of laboratory exercises that

include cellular respiration, enzyme kinetics, photosynthesis, transpiration. Fluorescence spectroscopy and basic protein biochemistry using Vernier's new SpectroVis Plus Spectrometer/Fluorometer will also be explored. Biotechnology topics will be presented in conjunction with Bio-Rad Laboratories. Special emphasis will be placed on how to conduct guided-inquiry using probeware in the college laboratory.
