New Video: As Baseball Returns, Registered Dietitian Nutritionists Fuel Players For Long, Grueling Season
Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Debuts Video Featuring Work of RDN with Major League Baseball Team
CHICAGO, April 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- As the 162-game, six-month Major League Baseball season gets underway, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is drawing attention to the importance of fueling athletes to help them achieve and maintain peak performance with a new video: Fueling the Professional Athlete: Dietitians in Sports.
Featuring Leslie Bonci, a registered dietitian nutritionist and board certified specialist in sports dietetics, the video examines her work with the Toronto Blue Jays and the increasing focus on food and nutrition for reaching optimum health and physical fitness both on and off the baseball diamond.
The board certification as a specialist in sports dietetics credential is the premier professional sports nutrition credential in the United States. CSSDs are registered dietitian nutritionists who provide safe, effective, evidence-based nutrition services for health, fitness and athletic performance.
"There are many, many more dietitians now who are employed with sports teams because every team is looking for the winning edge. I wouldn't call our athletes foodies, I'd call them fuelies," Bonci says. "They're particular about what they want to eat and they want to bring the expert in that can help make sure that those foods are available for them."
"Being involved as a sports dietitian is like being the pit crew," says Bonci. "They are the drivers, but we really have that role to play in terms of making sure that they are prepared to do what they need to do every single day."
"You want to play, you want to play long into your life, you think about what goes into your body," Bonci says.
