A five-alarm blaze tore through a dry cleaner in Long Island City, Queens, requiring more than 200 firefighters to respond to the scene. It took the FDNY nearly five hours to get the fire under control. Witnesses said the wind was blowing so much smoke for blocks that it was impossible for passers-by to tell where the fire was coming from. The fire spread to an adjacent furniture factory, but officials stated they were able to prevent major damage to the building. Two smoke-eaters suffered minor injuries and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Across the way in Brooklyn, another five-alarm fire in Lefferts Garden, Brooklyn burned down a commercial kitchen that makes school lunches. The fire also took approximately five hours to put out. And finally, a third fire took place on the Upper West Side, but firefighters were able to contain it.
