Joining S&P DJI in this endeavor and helping to bring greater awareness to the families that are still in need of assistance more than two years after the storm ripped through the region, is John Wallace –former Syracuse college star and NBA standout for the New York Knicks. Mr. Wallace has strong ties to the boroughs of New York City, and consistently plays an ongoing role in providing assistance to those in need throughout the City.
"The impact that Hurricane Sandy had on our lives, businesses, and communities in 2012 will never be forgotten," says Alex Matturri, CEO of S&P Dow Jones Indices. "However, for many of our fellow New Yorkers, it remains a challenge. Through our partnership with Habitat for Humanity New York City and the New York Knicks, our aim is to enliven those hardest hit by the storm by dedicating our time, resources, and talent to keep them moving along the track to full and complete recovery."
"We are also very proud to join with John Wallace to help us secure a new foundation of hope for those impacted by the storm. By taking the time out of his busy personal life and demanding professional schedule to partner with us here today, Mr. Wallace is helping to draw greater attention to the continuing needs of the people within this great borough."
Since the storm, Habitat for Humanity New York City has successfully mobilized hundreds of volunteers to help rebuild and repair damaged homes in Staten Island and Coastal Brooklyn. Through the Critical Home Repair program, each week Habitat NYC volunteers build alongside the families affected.
"Hurricane Sandy was a devastating moment for New York City but in the years following the storm Habitat NYC has been able to make a significant impact on the homes affected in Brooklyn and Staten Island. With the support of partners like S&P DJI, Habitat NYC is able to reach more and more families in need. We are delighted to have John Wallace volunteer with us and applaud his efforts to give back to the Staten Island community," says Alex Havriliak, Acting CEO of Habitat for Humanity New York City.
