The accident happened while the worker was positioning a monument at a grave in St. John's Cemetery in Queens.

According to the Fire Department of New York, the worker was partially conscious when paramedics arrived to rescue him from the 8-foot-deep hole. Firefighters had to strap the worker to a specially designed basket and pull him out via a pulley that was attached to a backhoe. The worker was then taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center and was last listed in critical condition.
