Newest surgical robot used for total joint replacement surgery for first time in Illinois
Ashton Center for Day Surgery becomes the first facility in the State of Illinois to perform robot-arm assisted total joint replacement surgery using the state-of-the-art Stryker Mako 4 surgical robot
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill., Oct. 1, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Chicago-area patients seeking outpatient joint replacement surgery have a new, high-quality, cost-effective choice for their care at a nationally accredited center that meets the highest standards for patient safety and quality.
Dr. Samuel Lake announced the successful completion of Illinois' first outpatient robot-arm assisted joint replacement surgery at a free-standing ambulatory surgery center (ASC) using the Stryker Mako 4 surgical robot.
Dr. Lake is a fellowship-trained and board-certified orthopedic surgeon, and a partner at Suburban Orthopaedics. He has performed hundreds of robot-assisted hip and knee replacements in hospital and ASC settings and now has welcomed the opportunity to be the first surgeon in Illinois to offer patients joint replacement surgery using the newest generation Stryker Mako 4 robot at an ambulatory surgery center.
Robotic-arm assisted joint replacement surgery helps surgeons achieve better outcomes, with less pain and quicker recovery times compared to traditional surgery. This helps patients get back to the things they love, quicker. "With the Mako 4 robotic system, I can utilize a CT scan to create a personalized surgical plan based on each patient's unique anatomy before entering the operating room," said Dr. Lake. "During surgery, I can confirm my plan and make any necessary adjustments while guiding the robotic arm to execute the intended surgical plan. It's exciting to be able to offer this transformative technology for partial knee replacements, total knee replacements, and total hip replacements."
"For appropriate candidates, an ASC is a safe, convenient, and cost-effective option, and we are proud to be the first center in Illinois to offer patients same-day joint replacement surgery using the Stryker Mako 4 robot," stated Dr. Lake. "Patients who undergo robotic-arm assisted total joint replacement at our center will go home the same day. Studies show that recovery at home can be beneficial to the patient, speeding the healing process and reducing the risk of infection."
The Ambulatory Surgery Center Association notes that "ASCs have transformed the outpatient experience for millions of Americans by providing them with a more convenient alternative to hospital-based outpatient procedures—and done so with a strong track record of quality care and positive patient outcomes," and ASCs save Medicare and patients billions of dollars each year by offering excellent care at lower overall costs.
"The Stryker Mako 4 system was selected as the latest and most advanced robotic technology, the fourth iteration in a series with a strong track record of proven results," stated Ashton Administrator and Chief Operating Officer Johny Antony. "And now, for the first time, patients in the Chicago area have the option to benefit from this innovative system in an ambulatory surgery center. Too often, patients have not been able to afford the treatment options available at large hospitals. With Mako SmartRobotics™, we are demonstrating our commitment to offer patients the best care available."
