Newseum to Host Journalists Memorial Rededication June 9

WASHINGTON, May 27, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Monday, June 9, at 10 a.m., the Newseum will rededicate its Journalists Memorial, which recognizes men and women who died or were killed in the pursuit of news. The names of 10 journalists whose work is representative of journalists who died covering the news in 2013 will be added to the memorial. The names of all journalists killed in 2013, compiled by the Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Without Borders, will be listed in two digital kiosks in the Newseum's Journalists Memorial Gallery.

Kathleen Carroll, executive editor and senior vice president of the Associated Press, will be the keynote speaker at the rededication. Carroll is responsible for all news content from the journalists based in the AP's 282 bureaus in 110 countries. She is vice chair of the Committee to Protect Journalists board, serves on the Associated Press Managing Editors board, and was a member of the Pulitzer Prize Board from 2003 to 2012, the last year as co-chair.

"The Journalists Memorial reminds us of the risks and sacrifices made by journalists around the world," said Gene Policinski, chief operating officer of the Newseum Institute. "Journalists face injury and threats, and some pay the ultimate sacrifice."

With this year's addition of 10 names from 2013, the memorial holds the names of 2,256 reporters, photographers, broadcasters and news executives from around the world, dating back to 1837. The 10 journalists being recognized at this year's rededication are:

The Newseum dedicated the Journalists Memorial on April 4, 2008, one week before the Newseum's grand opening on Pennsylvania Avenue. A previous memorial was displayed in Freedom Park at the Newseum's former site in Arlington, Va. The Journalists Memorial Gallery features hundreds of photographs of the listed journalists as well as kiosks where information on each person can be accessed.
