Nexant Helps Utah Office Building, EMI Health, Earn its First ENERGY STAR Certification
Outperforms similar U.S. buildings on measure of energy efficiency
SALT LAKE CITY, Nov. 7, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Nexant announces that EMI Health, from whom they lease their Salt Lake City, UT, office has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) ENERGY STAR® certification for superior energy performance. Nexant Engineer, Chris Cox, served as the Licensed Professional on the ENERGY STAR certification and worked with Mike Greenhalgh, the building owner, to compile 12 months of usage data, as well as measure site characteristics. Nexant Lighting Specialist, Barry Pomeroy, contributed to the building performance by tuning the lights to deliver only the light output needed, which resulted in a nearly 30% reduction in light power on Nexant's floor. Nexant Senior Engineer, Matthew Meyer, designed and coordinated the construction of the office space. This is the first year that EMI Health has earned the ENERGY STAR. Nexant was happy to assist in this certification as part of our commitment to conserve natural resources and produce fewer carbon emissions.
The EPA awarded an ENERGY STAR Score of 88, meaning that this building performs better than 88% of its peers (office buildings in the mountain west). Nexant also secured an ENERGY STAR Certification for a long-time Data Center customer, which achieved a score of 100. In Utah, the EPA's ENERGY STAR fact sheet shows that only 77 office buildings and 4 industrial plants have earned the ENERGY STAR for superior efficiency. ENERGY STAR is the foremost energy efficiency certification in the United States that is based on actual, verified energy performance.
The following items contributed to the EMI building's performances:
- A high efficiency Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) heating/cooling system.
- Ventilation air is delivered by Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs) that recover waste heat from the exhaust air flow and uses it to preheat the incoming fresh air.
- The site includes 100% LED light fixtures that are controlled by day lighting and occupancy sensors.
- The building shell is comprised of high performance glazing, well insulated walls and roof, and is tightly sealed.
- The HVAC system was properly commissioned and is scheduled to operate only when the building is occupied.
