NFL Great, Harry Carson, Addresses More Than 1,200 Graduates at the 2015 NYU School of Professional Studies Graduate Convocation Ceremony
Urges Graduates to "Make something of your life."
NEW YORK, May 17, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- NFL great, Harry Carson, was the speaker at the NYU School of Professional Studies (NYUSPS) graduate Convocation ceremony, held on Sunday, May 17, 2015, at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. His message: "Make something of your life."
More than 1,200 graduate students from across the country and around the world responded warmly to the words of the Pro Football Hall of Famer, who served as captain of the NY Giants for 10 of his 13 seasons and was named to the All-NFL Team seven times, the All-NFC Team eight times, and was NFC Linebacker of the Year twice.
Speaking about some of the major milestones in his own life, including his high school and college graduations, Carson stressed the importance of gaining an education not only for himself, but for his family and his community. He related the story of earning a scholarship to South Carolina State University, for which he had to pass a physical examination as part of the admissions requirement. His family physician, Dr. Roswell Beck, would not take his fee, telling Carson instead, that he wanted him to make something of his life.
Those words have played a significant role in Carson's success on and off the field. He noted in his speech, "Over the many years that I have lived, I've gotten thousands of words of encouragement, but this encounter with Dr. Beck was probably the most memorable of my life." He added that even though he played his last game many years ago and the cheering of the crowds has ended, those words still have a tremendous impact on him and have helped him to find many other ways to touch lives and make a difference.
Rated the #1 "Inside Linebacker" in NFL history by Pro Football Weekly, Carson was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
