No Extra Lesson Plan: 6 Ways Preschoolers Can Learn During Daily Routines

From grocery trips to bedtime, everyday routines can give young children opportunities to practice language, early math, problem-solving, and independence.

GREENVILLE, S.C., Nov. 3, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Families may not have extra time to plan educational activities between work, errands, dinner, and bedtime. But many of the routines already built into their day give young children opportunities to count, sort, make choices, follow steps, and talk through what they are doing. Tami Nix, president of Archway Academy and a past president of the South Carolina Association of Early Care and Education, says parents do not need to create a separate activity to make those moments useful.

"When children take part in something the family is already doing, parents can see what questions they ask and how they think through each step, allowing the conversation to develop naturally," Nix said.

Research has linked everyday actions with later development. A study published in Early Education and Development analyzed data from 3,250 children and found that stronger family routines during the preschool years were associated with greater gains in reading, math, and prosocial behavior as children entered kindergarten.

Nix recommends starting with these six everyday routines:

1. Invite them into meal preparation. Preschoolers can count ingredients, compare sizes, or help follow the order of a simple recipe. Asking "What do you think comes next?" or "How many do we need?" can introduce early math and sequencing skills into meal preparation.
2. Use grocery shopping to compare and count. Ask a child to find three apples, look for an item of a certain color, or compare package sizes. Parents can also talk about where different products belong as they move through the store.
3. Let them take responsibility for part of the cleanup. Give preschoolers one manageable task, such as putting books back on a shelf or matching toys with their containers. Completing a familiar job from start to finish can develop responsibility and independence.
4. Invite them to sort the laundry. Matching socks, separating clothing by family member, or grouping items by type makes children notice similarities and differences. It can also introduce early math skills such as matching, classifying, and comparing.
5. Let them take part in getting ready. Dressing, packing a bag, or preparing to leave the house involves a sequence of small steps. Parents can ask what needs to happen next or give children an age-appropriate part of the routine to complete on their own.
6. Use bedtime for stories and retelling. Reading together can continue after the last page when parents ask children what they remember, which part they liked, or what they think might happen next. Children can also retell a familiar story or talk through an event from their own day.

Parents can also let children take the lead. Rather than stepping in immediately, adults can let preschoolers work through a problem on their own. These everyday experiences can help children develop confidence in their abilities and become more comfortable handling challenges independently. "So often, a teaching opportunity can get lost in the daily rush. Sometimes the best thing a parent can do is give a child time to try," Nix said. "Small moments of independence are just as valuable as getting the task done quickly."
