It is estimated that we will see more than 20,000 new cases of stomach cancer this year in the US with over 10,000 deaths resulting from the disease. Because of the smaller number of cases relative to other cancers, it receives very little federal funding and few resources devoted to researching a cure. Stupid Strong exists for the purpose of making the cure for stomach cancer a reality.
Stupid Strong's Third Annual Show Your Love Walk will be at the Colleyville City Center on Nov. 13. In addition to the tribute walk, there will be a pooch parade, classic car show, cork and fork pull, silent auction, raffle and more. Silent auction donations include items such as Vacation Rentals in Steamboat, Colorado and Lake Tahoe, Nevada and a pair of Box Seats to Madame Butterfly at Margo and Bill Winspear Opera House, Dallas Stars game tickets, autographed sports memorabilia and a full orthodontic treatment from Colleyville-based Hashem Orthodontics; plus much more. Participants will be entertained by popular local vocal artists, musical groups and children's organization. Food and beverages will be served.
"The Walk is one of my favorite events. It really began as way for our friends and colleagues to show their support for my own personal journey but now it has grown to be a celebration for the community for their never ending support for our cause- to end gastric cancer," said Candace Netzer. "At this family-friendly event, there is really something for everyone. It's really just a party with a purpose. We are achieving our organization's vision, and we are that much closer to our ultimate goal of making the cure for gastric cancer a reality."
Colleyville resident Candace Netzer, president and founder of Stupid Strong, was diagnosed with Stage III stomach cancer in 2014 and founded the organization that same year. The ultimate goal is to put an end to gastric cancer.
Stupid Strong's first research grant of $151,974 was awarded to Baylor Health Care System Foundation. The principal investigator, Dr. Ajay Goel, is the director for the Baylor Center of Gastrointestinal Cancer Research and also a director for the Center for Epigenetics, Cancer Prevention & Cancer Genomics. One of the primary focuses of the research program is cancer prevention through development of robust molecular biomarkers that can facilitate early diagnosis, better prognosis or predict response to chemotherapies for human cancer, particularly gastric cancer.
Stupid Strong conducts numerous community-based events to raise funds for research for early diagnosis and treatment options available for stomach cancer patients.
