The launch of the HR Department came in 2008 when the Children's Services Council of Palm Beach County (CSC) saw a critical need for professional Human Resources support and guidance in the county's nonprofit community. In most cases, nonprofit agencies did not have the means to fund some or all of the necessary HR representation. CSC founded the HR Department at Nonprofits First to serve and fill those gaps. The two person team, led by Leah Shaw, SPHR, CBP, CCP and supported by HR Generalist, Jean Vetter, provides HR support spanning compensation, benefits, management practices, executive coaching, organizational development, recruitment, employee relations, and training for approximately 3,000 employees.

Nonprofits First is a 501(c)(3) organization in South Florida whose goal is to build a nonprofit community that excels in the development and implementation of sound management practices. Nonprofits First provides Finance, Certification, IT and HR services to nonprofit agencies in the community through leadership development, education, and management services. Since its inception in 2005, they have provided services to over 500 agencies in Palm Beach, Broward and St. Lucie Counties. Nonprofits First is funded by CSC, Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties, Palm Beach County, Alleghany Franciscan Ministries, Inc., Quantum Foundation and United Way of Palm Beach County.

The HR Department of the Year award will be presented at a ceremony at HRPBC's upcoming HR Conference on May 19th at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, FL.
