North Carolina's PSE Blocking Technology Leading To Progress In Battle Against Meth
Electronic Technology Blocks Illegal Sales, Allows Legal Ones
LUTHERVILLE, Md., Oct. 31, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) – a nonprofit organization that facilitates cooperation between law enforcement, healthcare professionals, state regulatory agencies and pharmaceutical manufacturers in the prevention and investigation of drug diversion – today released the latest results achieved by the real-time, stop-sale system in North Carolina. Data for 2012 aggregated through the National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx) shows that so far this year, electronic technology in the Tar Heel State blocked the sale of more than 54,000 boxes of medicines containing pseudoephedrine (PSE), preventing more than 124,000 grams from potentially being diverted by meth criminals. NPLEx was fully implemented in North Carolina in January 2012.
"It's been less than a year since North Carolina adopted real-time, stop-sale technology, and the system is already demonstrating impressive results," said Charles F. Cichon, executive director of the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI). "The proven system allows retailers to block unlawful purchases at the point of sale and provides law enforcement officials with valuable information in real time. This targeted approach protects law-abiding citizens' access to the cold and allergy medicines of their choice."
